Imperial unit of linear measure, a twelfth of a foot, equal to 2.54 centimetres.

It was defined in statute by Edward II of England as the length of three barley grains laid end to end.

inch

Scottish and Irish geographical term denoting a small island or land by a river, or occasionally rising ground on a plain. It is found in place names such as the Inches of Perth on the River Tay, local water meadows, and the islands of Inchcolm, Inch Garvie, and Inchkeith in the Firth of Forth, Scotland.
