tokamak

Russian acronym for toroidal magnetic chamber, an experimental machine conceived by Soviet physicist Andrei Sakharov and developed in the Soviet Union to investigate controlled nuclear fusion. It consists of a doughnut-shaped chamber surrounded by electromagnets capable of exerting very powerful magnetic fields. The fields are generated to confine a very hot (millions of degrees) plasma of ions and electrons, keeping it away from the chamber walls. See also JET.
