tourniquet

In medicine, a cuff that can be tightened around the upper end of the thigh or the arm to close the arteries to the limb and stop the flow of blood. Tourniquets are rarely used in modern medicine because gangrene may result. Direct pressure to the point of bleeding is simpler, safer, and at least as effective as a tourniquet.
