Idea that the relationship between leaders and their followers develops from the exchange of some reward, such as performance ratings, pay, recognition, or praise. It involves leaders clarifying goals and objectives, and communicating in order to organize tasks and activities with the cooperation of their employees, to ensure wider organizational goals are met.
