tribute list

Ancient Greek stone tablet recording a sixtieth part (one mina in every talent) of the tribute paid by the Delian League. This was dedicated by the Athenians to the goddess Athena.

The remainder of the tribute was principally used for the maintenance of the fleet but also for other expenditure such as public works in Athens, including building commissions on the Acropolis.

The tribute lists are a major source of evidence for the extent and composition of the Delian League, enabling greater understanding of the economic foundations of Athenian power and offering details of dealings with allies in the period 454–408 BC. The importance given to a strong fleet is an example; an indication of Athenian policy aiming to deter Persia and discourage revolt among the allies.
