triceps  The movements of the arm depend on two muscles, the biceps and the triceps. To lift the arm, the biceps shortens and the triceps lengthens. To lower the arm, the opposite occurs: the biceps lengthens and the triceps shortens. | Muscle in the upper arm that causes the arm to straighten at the elbow (extend). To bend the arm its antagonistic muscle – the biceps – has to contract. The bending of the arm in this movement occurs at the elbow joint. |
