tricuspid valve |
Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Medical, Wikipedia | 0.09 sec. |
tricuspid valveFlap of tissue situated on the right side of the heart between the atrium and the ventricle. It prevents blood flowing backwards when the ventricle contracts. As in all valves, its movements are caused by pressure changes during the beat rather than by any intrinsic muscular activity. As the valve snaps shut, a vibration passes through the chest cavity and is detectable as the first sound of the heartbeat. How to thank TFD for its existence?
