An eight-lined poem, with repetition of the first line as the fourth and seventh, and of the second line as the eighth; and with first, third, fourth, fifth, and seventh lines, and second, sixth, and eighth lines, rhyming. The form was developed in medieval French poetry, and was revived on a small scale in 19th-century English poetry.
