trio

In music, an ensemble of three instruments, or the music written fo such a group. It is used for the interlude between repeats of a minuet or scherzo, which was originally for a trio of players.

The most common combination of instruments in a trio is the piano trio, which usually consists of piano, violin, and cello. Famous examples include Beethoven's ‘Archduke’ Trio and Dmitri Shostakovich's Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor.
