trumpeter

Any South American bird of the genus Psophia, family Psophiidae, order Gruiformes, up to 50 cm/20 in tall, related to the cranes. Trumpeters have long legs, a short bill, and dark plumage. The trumpeter swan is unrelated.

P. crepitans is a bird of lustrous and brilliantly-coloured plumage and is often domesticated. There are three species; very little is known about any of them in the wild.
