trypsin |
Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Medical, Encyclopedia, Wikipedia | 0.04 sec. |
trypsinEnzyme in the vertebrate gut responsible for the digestion of protein molecules. It is secreted by the pancreas but in an inactive form known as trypsinogen. Activation into working trypsin occurs only in the small intestine, owing to the action of another enzyme, enterokinase, secreted by the wall of the duodenum. Unlike the digestive enzyme pepsin, found in the stomach, trypsin does not require an acid environment. How to thank TFD for its existence?
