tsarist rule

System of political government in Russia. It was adopted by Ivan IV in 1547 and meant to express the highest form of domination, similar to that of the Holy Roman Emperor in Western Europe. Tsarist rule lasted until the abdication in 1917 and execution in 1918 of Tsar Nicholas II.
