Hesketh's work is a cerebral, introspective work which contains some magnificent tuttis.
In the first movement, Davis's emphatic, rich-toned way with the orchestral tuttis provided the perfect foil for Kremer's wistful, rhapsodic musings, the violin tone cool and silvery without ever undervaluing the expressive weight of Elgar's solo lines.
Ades stretched his vocal lines to the singers' utmost limits, but the large orchestra accompanied the voices with chamber-like solicitude, leaving the tuttis for the depiction of storm and tempest in the interludes.
