typesetting

Means by which text, or copy, is prepared for printing, now usually carried out by using specialized computer programs.

Text is keyed on a typesetting machine in a similar way to typing. Laser or light impulses are projected on to light-sensitive film that, when developed, can be used to make plates for printing.
