typhoid feverAcute infectious disease of the digestive tract, caused by the bacterium Salmonella typhi, and usually contracted through a contaminated water supply. It is characterized by bowel haemorrhage and damage to the spleen. Treatment is with antibiotics. The symptoms begin 10–14 days after ingestion and include fever, headache, cough, constipation, and rash. The combined TAB vaccine protects both against typhoid and the milder, related condition known as paratyphoid fever. A strain of typhoid fever emerged in the late 1990s in Tajikistan that was resistant to all known antibiotics. How to thank TFD for its existence?
