A water spirit, one of the elemental spirits.

Undine

Opera by E T A Hoffmann (libretto by the composer), produced in Berlin at the Schauspielhaus on 3 August 1816. Water nymph Undine can gain a soul by marrying a mortal. She meets and falls in love with the knight Huldbrand, but when he changes allegiance to Berthalda, Undine kisses him, drowning him.

Opera by Lortzing (libretto by composer, based on Fouqué), produced in Magdeburg on 21 April 1845. Similar to Hoffmann's version, but Huldebrand is called Hugo von Ringstetten.

Ballet in three acts by Henze (choreographed by Ashton); (1956-57), produced at Covent Garden, London, on 27 October 1958, conducted Henze, with Fonteyn. Wedding Music from the ballet arranged for wind orchestra 1957; two orchestral suites 1958; Undine, Trois pas des Tritons for orchestra, performed in Rome on 10 January 1959, conductor Celibidache.
