Brucellosis, also called undulant fever, or Malta fever, in humans is a highly contagious zoonosis (infectious disease transmitted from animals to humans) caused by bacteria of the genus Brucella.
He was invalided home at the end of 1943 with recurrent undulant fever and worked the last two war years in an emergency hospital in Winwick, near Warrington, where he encountered Jim Seddon and his ideas that orthopaedic doctors should specialise.
During these years, he was sick with malaria, then undulant fever, and he suffered the loss of his father and his mother-in-law.
