In mathematics, a set which is formed by joining up two or more other sets.

Union

Town in Union County, northeast New Jersey; population (1990) 50,000. It is located 6 km/4 mi southwest of Newark. Steel, metal products, paint, lacquer, pharmaceuticals, and chemicals are manufactured in the town. It is home to the Kean College of New Jersey (1855).

Union was settled by colonists from Connecticut in 1749, and originally was called Connecticut Farms. The site of a 1780 battle, it was separated from Elizabethtown in 1808.

Town and administrative headquarters of Union County, northwest South Carolina; population (1990) 9,800. It is located 42 km/26 mi southeast of Spartanburg. It is a stop on the Southern Railway. Union has cotton, hosiery, and lumber mills, and also produces peaches, fertilizer, and bakery products. It was settled late in the 18th century around the log cabin Union Church, which welcomed both Presbyterians and Episcopalians.
