Uptown

General designation in many – especially older – US cities for exclusively residential or mixed residential and commercial districts, as distinct from Downtown, their industrial centres. The name derives from the fact that the more desirable areas of cities tended to be on higher ground, away from industrial and commercial waterfronts, and at times also upwind from the smoke and smells of factories.

notables examples of Uptown districts include: areas of the city of San Diego that lie to the southeast of Old Town; the residential and commercial district situated on the North Side of Chicago; in New Orleans, that part of the city that lies upriver of Canal Street; in Minneapolis, the fashionable shopping and entertainment locale immediately south of Downtown; sections above 59th Street in Manhattan, New York City ( including the Upper West and Upper East Sides, and Harlem); the central business district of Charlotte, North Carolina; and the neighbourhood in Pittsburgh that is located immediately east of the Golden Triangle, around Fifth Avenue.
