Metropolis

City and seat of Massac County, in the far south of Illinois; population (1990) 6,700. Metropolis is located on the Ohio River, 11 km/7 mi northwest of Paducah, Kentucky.

The original Fort Massac, built by the French in 1757, is now in a state park covering 6 sq km/2.3 sq mi. A settlement established nearby in 1796 and Metropolis City (founded 1839) combined to form the modern city, which is a centre for agricultural products and timber. In recognition of the fact that the city in the Superman comic books is called ‘Metropolis’, a statue of the superhero has been erected here, and a Superman Festival is held every year in June.
