valence electron

Electron in the outermost shell of an atom. It is the valence electrons that are involved in the formation of ionic and covalent bonds (see molecule). The number of electrons in this outermost shell represents the maximum possible valence for many elements and matches the number of the group that the element occupies in the periodic table of the elements.
