heroism

Outstanding bravery or courage on the part of an individual, often in exceptional circumstances. Heroism is frequently displayed in a military context and official honours such as the British Victoria Cross or the French Croix de Valeur may be awarded in recognition of this. However, most states also now recognize civilian heroism.

The term comes from Greek mythology, where the child resulting from the union between a human and a god or goddess was known as a hero. Since much early Greek literature focused on the doings of gods and heroes, the term then came to mean the main protagonist in a book or play. These heroes frequently displayed superhuman characteristics and exceptional feats of bravery, strength, and military endeavour, so the term then came to mean anyone displaying exceptional resource.
