van Hoften, James Dougal Adrianus (1944– )

US astronaut. He flew on the Challenger mission in April 1984 to repair the Solar Max satellite. In August 1985, he flew on Discovery to deploy three communications satellites. He logged a total of 22 hours of extravehicular activity. Van Hoften was selected as an astronaut in 1978 and left NASA in 1986.
