Vermillion

Town and administrative headquarters of Clay County, southeast South Dakota; population (1990) 10,000. It is situated on the Vermillion River, 37 km/23 mi east of Yankton. It is a processing centre in a farming area that produces dairy items, cantaloupes, tomatoes, and grain. The town was founded in 1859, near the site of Fort Vermillion (1835), an American Fur Company trading post. It is home to the University of South Dakota, founded in 1862 and opened 20 years later.
