verset

In music, a short organ piece, often but not necessarily fugal and frequently incorporating or containing some reference to a given plainsong tune. The name is derived from the former practice in the Roman Catholic service of replacing every other sung verse of psalms, etc, by interludes on the organ to relieve the supposed monotony of plainsong.
