vertical blanking interval

Brief space between the drawing of television frames when no picture information is transmitted. The VBI may appear as black bars at the top and bottom of the screen on badly-adjusted TV sets. Several systems have exploited the VBI to broadcast data signals for other purposes. Examples include teletext pages (Ceefax, Teletext), subtitles for deaf viewers, and Intel's Intercast.
