In astronomy, group of ten 25-m/82-ft radio telescopes spread across North America, the US Virgin Islands, and Hawaii, that operate as a single instrument using the technique of very long-baseline interferometry to obtain high-resolution images. The longest baseline (distance between pairs of telescopes) is over 8,600 km/4,970 mi. The first observation using all ten sites occurred 29 May 1993.The total construction cost was over US$85 million.
