vibraphone

Electrophonic percussion instrument resembling a xylophone but with metal keys. Electrically driven discs spin within resonating tubes under each key to add a tremulant effect that can be controlled in length with a foot pedal.

Scottish saxophonist Tommy Smith's early career in the 1980s made the progress of a shooting star look leisurely: lifted off Edinburgh's tough Wester Hailes streets to Boston's Berklee School of Music at 17, out on tour with American vibraharp star Gary Burton two years later, becoming the first UK jazz musician ever to record for the famous Blue Note label at 22.
