vincristine

Alkaloid extracted from the blue periwinkle plant Vinca rosea. Developed as an anticancer agent, it has revolutionized the treatment of childhood acute leukaemias; it is also included in chemotherapy regimens for some lymphomas (cancers arising in the lymph tissues) and lung and breast cancers. Side effects, such as nerve damage and loss of hair, are severe but usually reversible.
