peritoneum

Membrane lining the abdominal cavity and digestive organs of vertebrates. Peritonitis, inflammation within the peritoneum, can occur due to infection or other irritation. It is sometimes seen following a burst appendix and quickly proves fatal if not treated.

The visceral peritoneum is the inner layer that envelops the abdominal organs and forms the periphery of the intestinal tract.
The highest category of local extent is pT4, which includes both local extension into adjacent organs and involvement of the visceral peritoneum (serosa) by the tumor (Figure 1, A).
In addition, multiple rough whitish nodules were evident on the pancreas and the visceral peritoneum lining the intestine.
