vocalise

In music, a concert work for voice without words, sung on one or more vowels, usually ‘ah’, which is sustainable over the widest range and allows an open tone. Examples include Rachmaninov's Vocalise for Soprano and Orchestra (1912, revised 1915) and Villa-Lobos' Bachianas Brasileiras No 5 (1938–45).

Electric instruments such as the theremin and ondes Martenot are employed in the manner of a vocalise, with the added advantages of amplification and extended range.
