Volkslied

Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus 0.01 sec.

Volkslied

Popular German song. Although Germany possesses a treasury of old folk songs, many of which became hymns for the Lutheran church, the term Volkslied no longer exclusively or even principally designates them: what Germans now mean by Volkslied is a type of popular song, such as Friedrich Silcher's Loreley, the composers of which are known (which is not the case with genuine folk songs), and which have passed into general currency.
