Wainwright

Town in east-central Alberta, Canada; population (1991) 4,700. It is located 185 km/115 mi east-southeast of Edmonton, in farming and ranching country. It trades in and ships wheat and cattle. Numerous oil and gas wells and an oil refinery are in the area.

Founded in 1905 as Denwood, the town was later moved 4 km/2 mi to a Grand Trunk Pacific Railway divisional point. Oil and gas were discovered in 1919. Nearby Camp Wainwright, a Canadian Forces Base, was a buffalo reserve until World War II.
