Garbage

US alternative rock band. Known for their heavy sound and raging lyrics, the band formed during the early 1990s in Wisconsin. Their self-titled debut album (1995) featured the songs ‘Queer’, ‘Only Happy When It Rains’, and ‘Stupid Girl’. Other albums include Version 2.0 (1998), featuring the single ‘Push It’, Beautiful Garbage (2001), featuring the single ‘Androgyny’, and Bleed Like Me (2005), featuring ‘Why Do You Love Me?’.

The band was formed by music producers Butch Vig (1957– ) on drums, Duke Erikson (1953– ) on guitar and keyboard, and Steve Marker (1960– ) on guitar and bass, who held jam sessions in Marker's basement. The trio recruited Scottish vocalist Shirley Manson (1966– ), previously of the band Angelfish, who added her edgy style and sneering performances.

Vig and Erikson were both previously members of the band Spooner in Wisconsin. Marker, a native New Yorker who went to university in Wisconsin, was a fan of the band and eventually recorded their music. Later Vig and Marker set up Smart Studios, which recorded local alternative bands and went on to become a leading producer of indie music, producing singles by such bands as Nirvana, Sonic Youth, and Smashing Pumpkins. Garbage also contributed the title song to the James Bond film The World Is Not Enough (1999).
