water boatman

Any water bug of the family Corixidae that feeds on plant debris and algae. It has a flattened body 1.5 cm/0.6 in long, with oarlike legs.

The name is sometimes also used for the backswimmers, genus Notonecta, which are superficially similar, but which can fly and which belong to a different family (Notonectidae) of bugs.
