water of crystallization

Water chemically bonded to a salt in its crystalline state. For example, in copper(II) sulphate, there are five moles of water per mole of copper sulphate: hence its formula is CuSO4.5H2O. This water is responsible for the colour and shape of the crystalline form. When the crystals are heated gently, the water is driven off as steam and a white powder of the anhydrous salt is formed.

CuSO4.5H2O(s) → CuSO4 (s) + 5H2O(g)
