Ube| City in Yamaguchi prefecture, southwest of Honshu island, Japan; population (1995 est) 175,100. The city is situated on the coast, near Shimonoseki, and near the Ube coalfields, which closed in 1967. Ube is an important centre of the chemical and heavy industries, and its products include soda, sulphuric acid, cement, metals, machinery, cotton textiles, magnesium, and fertilizers. Much of the industry is located on reclaimed land. |
| Ube is served by a modern harbour through which local industrial products are exported. |
