watermelon

Large melon belonging to the gourd family, native to tropical Africa, with a dark green rind and reddish juicy flesh studded with a large number of black seeds. It is widely cultivated in subtropical regions. (Genus Citrullus vulgaris, family Cucurbitaceae.)

When the lesson was over, we used to go up to the watermelon patch behind the garden.
The true Southern watermelon is a boon apart, and not to be mentioned with commoner things.
And so we talked and smoked and stuffed watermelons much as two hours, and then it was pretty late, and when we got back the house was quiet and dark, and everybody gone to bed.
