water skiing

Water sport in which a person is towed across water on a ski or skis (wider than those used for skiing on snow), or barefoot, by means of a rope attached to a speedboat. Competitions are held for overall performances, slalom, tricks, jumping, and racing. Wakeboarding, in which competitors ride on a board similar to a small surfboard, is a popular variation.

In 1922 US inventor Ralph Samuelson pioneered the sport as it is known today. Water skiing's international governing body is the International Water Ski Federation (IWSF). This replaced the World Water Ski Union (WWSU), formed in 1946 as the Union Internationale de Ski Nautique. World championships were first held in 1949 and are now staged every two years.
