wayang kulit

Indonesian shadow-puppet theatre, with characters drawn from the Sanskrit epic tradition contrasted with grotesque demons and clowns. Performances, with jointed puppets cut from leather (Javanese kulit ‘skin’), are accompanied by the gamelan orchestra and may last all through the night, on private or public celebrations. Similar forms of shadow-puppet theatre are found in India and Malaya.
