weightGravitational force exerted on an object by another object. The weight of an object depends on its mass - the amount of material in it - and the strength of the local gravitational pull (the acceleration due to gravity). The Earth's gravitational pull decreases with height and consequently, an object weighs less at the top of a mountain than at sea level. On the surface of the Moon, an object has only one-sixth of its weight on Earth (although its mass is unchanged), because the Moon's surface gravity is one-sixth that of the Earth's. |
