Westerly

Town in Washington County, southwest Rhode Island; population (1990) 21,600. It is situated on the Pawcatuck River and the Connecticut state border. A shipbuilding centre in the 19th century, Westerly has also produced bleach and dyes and granite. It is now chiefly a resort area.
