ARDS

Abbreviation for adult respiratory distress syndrome.

Ards

Administrative region in the east of Northern Ireland, serving an area in the centre and east of County Down; area 380 sq km/147 sq mi; population (2001) 73,000. The towns under the council's remit include Newtownards, Comber, Portaferry, Ballygowan, Donaghadee, and Millisle. Ards serves part of the northern shore of Belfast Lough, and down into the Ards Peninsula, sitting alongside Strangford Lough. The principal sources of employment include agriculture, the fishing industry, tourism, retail, and the craft industry.
