whitefish

Any of various freshwater fishes, genera Coregonus and Prosopium, of the salmon family, found in lakes and rivers of North America and Eurasia. They include the whitefish C. clupeaformis and cisco C. artedi.

Whitefish

Town in Flathead County, northwest Montana; population (1990) 4,400. It is situated on Whitefish Lake, 24 km/15 mi north of Kalispell. A lake and ski resort just south of the Whitefish Range and surrounded by Flathead National Forest, it was originally a Great Northern Railroad repair and division point. It also has sawmills.
