Wildwood

Town in Cape May County, south New Jersey; population (1990) 4,500. It is situated on a 14 km/9 mi-long barrier island on the Atlantic Ocean, 53 km/33 mi southwest of Atlantic City, and 10 km/6 mi northeast of Cape May. Settled in 1882, it merged with Holly Beach City in 1911. It flourished during the 1950s, and is known for its many period motels. There are 8 km/5 mi of wide public beaches in the area, together with a 4 km/3 mi-long boardwalk. Four large piers house amusement centres. A summer music festival is held annually.
