windcap

    0.12 sec.

windcap

In music, a cylindrical cover protecting the double reed of a woodwind instrument, such as the crumhorn or shawm. It prevents the player's lips from making direct contact with the reeds and forms a secure airtight container, ensuring consistency of air pressure and tone. In omitting the windcap, baroque instruments introduced a new aesthetic of controlled variability of tone for expressive effect.
