Although windsurfing started in the USA, it is now a popular water sport all over the world. The first windsurfing world championships were held in 1973. Windsurfing was first contested at the Olympics in 1984.

Water sport combining elements of surfing and sailing, first developed in the USA in 1968. The windsurfer stands on a board that is propelled and steered by means of a sail attached to a mast that is articulated at the foot. Since 1984 the sport has been included in the Olympic Games as part of the yachting events. From 1992 men and women have competed in separate categories. There are also annual boardsailing world championships.

Using the Lechner board, speeds in excess of 40 knots have been achieved.
