coltsfoot

Perennial plant belonging to the daisy family. The single yellow flower heads have many narrow rays (not petals), and the stems have large purplish scales. The large leaf, up to 22 cm/9 in across, is shaped like a horse's foot and gives the plant its name. Coltsfoot grows in Europe, northern Asia, and North Africa, often on bare ground and in waste places, and has been introduced to North America. It was formerly used in medicine. (Tussilago farfara, family Compositae.)
