witch hazelAny of a group of flowering shrubs or small trees belonging to the witch hazel family, native to North America and East Asia, especially H. virginiana. An astringent extract prepared from the bark or leaves is used in medicine as an eye lotion and a liniment to relieve pain or stiffness. (Genus Hamamelis, family Hamamelidaceae.)
