Witenagemot is the Old English word for an assembly of wise men, or councillors, in Anglo-Saxon England.
The deposition of Edward II in 1327 recalled a power of the ancient Anglo-Saxon Witenagemot, resolving a tense political situation by settling the crown on his still adolescent son, Edward III.
